Dark Sky Steering Committee Member Application
The Town of Pagosa Springs is seeking motivated and qualified individuals to volunteer their expertise with the objective of International Dark Sky Certification. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to assist in managing light pollution and reducing artificial light at night.
The Role:
A Steering Committee Member will join forces with the Town of Pagosa Springs’ Development Services Department to complete the elements required for submission of an application to become an International Dark Sky Community by December of 2026.
A Steering Committee Member will be a fervent proponent of Dark Skies within our community and assist in the lengthy process of achieving the status of an International Dark Sky Community.
A Steering Committee Member is a committed steward with the vision of long-range objectives in dark sky preservation and restoration for the Town of Pagosa Springs.
A Steering Committee Member is a community advocate that strives in collaboration and outreach for the Town of Pagosa Springs with the ability to think critically about issues and concerns involving the appearance of the Town’s night sky.
Steering Committee Member Traits and Prowess:
Passion for the Mission. An ideal member of the Dark Sky Steering Committee is passionate about environmental preservation through the night sky. They would show good faith efforts to the mission by making their own home or business’ lighting dark sky compliant.
Critical Thinking. The Dark Sky Steering Committee aspires to attract individuals who possess the ability to think outside of the box. They can bring ideas to the table to work towards a long-range vision.
Knowledge of Relevant Topics. They can articulately converse on key topics of Dark Sky environmental concerns, astronomy, and light pollution. They shall also have the greater vision of the community in mind.
Communication Skills. A strong candidate shall be able to effectively and comfortably communicate in a public setting. They must be able to collaborate in a group setting while practicing actively listening and empathy.
Experience in Group Mission. A strong candidate has served on boards, groups, or committees that have focused on community preservation or development.
Commitment. They clearly value and aspire to see the community’s designation come to fruition. They would attend meetings, events, and volunteer days.
Community Oriented. An ideal candidate is passionate about the Town of Pagosa Springs and its positive growth.They want to better the health, safety, and welfare of the entire community through their efforts.
Steering Committee Membership Expectations:
Strong attendance at meetings, at least 75%.
Commitment to the committee for at least one (1) year.
Participate in completing an inventory of Town-owned lighting.
Participate in taking and recording sky quality measurements at designated locations.
Familiarize oneself with the Dark Sky International’s IDSP Community guidelines, including engagement, education, and ordinances.
Consistent communication with the committee through emails, texts, and phone calls.
Steering Committee Advocacy Expectations:
Promote the conscious importance of Dark Skies and how it leads to cost savings, environmental and personal health within the community.
Act as a community advocate whenever possible by discussing the movement in community settings.
Attend Outreach and Education Events within the community. Periodically keep charge of event tables or booths and distribute literature and resources.
Serve as a liaison for the Town and Committee to ensure the project reflects the needs and values of residents, local businesses, and stakeholders.
Support the implementation of cost-effective, environmentally friendly, lighting solutions.
Steering Committee Leadership Expectations:
Promote the importance and impact of the Dark Sky initiative taking into consideration the financial and environmental benefits.
Use your personal and professional network to expand awareness of the project and to build a stronger network of stakeholders, community members, and experts.
Identify and address concerns or hurdles to community acceptance and engagement of the proposal.
Identify channels of engagement for the various sects of the public (Businesses, residents, stakeholders, generational groups).
