Located at 92 1st Street, the Historic Water Treatment Facility, or the Water Works, is one of two public Historic Landmarks in Pagosa Springs designated in 1999.

Responding to a spate of demolitions, Town Council enacted a series of emergency ordinances to halt additional loss of potential historic resources, which gave life to Historic Preservation in Pagosa Springs.

The Historic Waterworks was constructed in 1938 under the Works Progress Administration, or the WPA Program.

Thanks to the Waterworks' status as a Historic Landmark, the benefits of being a Certified Local Government (CLG), and the dedication of staff and professionals, the Waterworks is being restored to its former glory using funds from the State Historic Preservation Office.

The Waterworks is the home of the San Juan Historical Museum.
